South Beach in Hossegor

Why choose Hossegor to get started?

Hossegor offers several advantages:

  • Sandy beaches without rocky reefs.

  • A wide variety of spots to suit the conditions of the day.

  • Surf schools open year-round.

  • The water is relatively warm from May through October.

  • A unique surf atmosphere with plenty of shops and restaurants.

Although Hossegor is famous for its powerful waves, the school tailors its lessons to the tides and conditions in order to offer the best waves for beginners.

Can you really learn to surf in Hossegor?

Yes.

The images of the massive barrels at La Gravière can be impressive, but these waves are only for experienced surfers.

Beginners usually surf on:

  • The South

  • certain areas of Central Beach

  • nearby beaches such as Capbreton or Seignosse when conditions are more favorable.

Every day, the “Hossegor Surf Rendez-Vous” school will choose the spot that offers:

  • low current;

  • gentle waves suited to your skill level;

  • enough space to learn.

When is the best time to start?

Summer (June through September)

This is the perfect time.

You'll enjoy:

  • smaller, more consistent swells;

  • water between 20 and 23°C;

  • The "Hossegor Surf Rendez-Vous" school offers lessons every day.

This is the best time of year to start taking lessons.

Spring and Fall

Perfect for making progress:

  • fewer people;

  • more frequent waves;

  • The water is still pleasant.

What happens during the first class?

A session usually lasts between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours. Our surf school provides you with a very stable 7- to 9-foot foam board and a full-body wetsuit.

It includes:

  1. overview of the equipment;

  2. safety rules;

  3. reading the waves;

  4. learning to row;

  5. takeoff training on sand;

  6. Launching the boat accompanied by Thomas Esquillot or Tehina Blasquiz, the school’s two instructors.

The goal of the first class is not to perform maneuvers, but to:

  • understanding the ocean;

  • ride your first waves;

  • manage to get up for a few seconds.

How many classes are needed?

Everyone progresses at a different pace, but on average:

  • Standing up on a wave - 1 to 2 sessions

  • Surfing Alone - 3 to 5 sessions

  • Start spinning - 5 to 10 sessions

  • Become independent - 10 to 20 sessions
